Primary Energy Consumption (PEV)

Primary Energy Consumption (PEV)

According to the Federal Environment Agency, primary energy consumption (PEC) refers to the energy content of all energy sources used domestically. This includes all energy carriers in their natural state, such as fossil fuels, nuclear energy, and renewable energy sources. The PEC is a crucial factor for assessing a country's energy efficiency and is heavily influenced by economic conditions, new technologies, raw material prices, and weather, which affects the need for space heating. Since the early 1990s, PEC has been steadily declining, with a reduction in the use of conventional primary energy sources (except natural gas) and a consistent increase in renewable energy utilization. The 2023 Energy Efficiency Act mandates that PEC must be reduced by 39.3% by 2030 compared to 2008 levels.

Buildings contribute significantly to PEC. By reducing primary energy consumption, operators can not only help lower CO2 emissions and combat climate change but also significantly reduce operating costs in commercial buildings. The aedifion cloud platform provides a digital software upgrade that enables optimally managed portfolios, maintaining value while aligning with future-oriented, sustainable PEC reduction goals.
