The aedifion-Story

Foundation

aedifion GmbH was founded in September 2017 out of a research project at RWTH Aachen University by Dr.-Ing. Johannes Fütterer, Felix Dorner, Dr. Jan Henrik Ziegeldorf and Erik Brümmendorf.

Market Readiness

In 2018, we have transferred the findings of our research into a market-ready product and were able to convince the first customers of our software.

Analysis

With aedifion.analytics we were launching AI-based analytics in 2019 for the first time, making expert engineering knowledge accessible to our customers via the platform.

With the launch of aedifion.controls in 2021, we created the first complete solution for a Net Zero building operation in the German market.

Series A

In our Series A round in early 2023, we were able to attract exciting investors to support us and our solution. With the fresh capital, we are expanding our product offering and aiming to become the market leader in Europe.

Intelligent Electricity Cost Optimization

With the launch of aedifion.dynamics in 2025, we are introducing our first complete solution for intelligent electricity cost optimization. Our system connects all energy systems within a building to enable flexible, cost-efficient electricity usage, maximizing self-consumption and reducing operating costs.

Series B

With the capital from the Series B funding round, aedifion is accelerating its European and international expansion while strengthening its technological leadership in intelligent building management. Key priorities include AI-driven solutions for energy management, load optimization, and demand side management, as well as the further development of its virtual building assistant based on generative AI.

Today

What began with four creative minds has grown into a company of more than 100 employees, all dedicated to the secure and innovation-driven operation of our platform and services. With over 600 exciting projects, the aedifion story is clearly one of success.

Origin

We have our origins in science, it is second nature to us. After years of preliminary work at RWTH Aachen University, we were able to bring our vision in the shape of the cloud platform from research to the market with the help of the Exist research transfer.

Manfred Heid

Chairman of the Advisory Board

Manfred Heid has successfully realized global venture capital & private equity investments with a volume of +150m EUR. Additionally, he has developed two technology concepts at the intersection of FinTech & PropTech before Co-Founding BitStone Capital & Realyze Ventures as one of the most active Real Estate Venture Capital investment platforms in DACH.

Dr. Mark Windeknecht

Dr. Mark Windeknecht is a Principal at World Fund. Mark previously worked for Vito One, where he was responsible for the operational business. There, he invested across the PropTech, ConTech, and EnergyTech verticals. Mark began his career in academia as a researcher at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), having completed his doctorate in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a Master’s degree in Energy and Process Engineering at TUM.

Marcus Böker

Marcus Böker is Managing Director of Phoenix Contact Innovation Ventures. For more than 10 years, he has been expanding M&A activities within the Phoenix Contact Group and establishing corporate venturing as a strategic added value. Marcus Böker has more than 20 years of experience in corporate development, M&A and venture activities.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dirk Müller

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dirk Müller is director of the Institute for Energy Efficient Buildings and Indoor Climate at the E.ON Energy Research Center at RWTH Aachen University. With extensive experience in industrial research at Bosch and Behr and as a long-time professor at the Technical University of Berlin, he is a leading expert in energy-efficient building technology and sustainable climate modeling.

Daniel Hinz

Daniel Hinz is responsible for all venture activities at Drees & Sommer SE. Prior to this role, he served as Managing Director of the Global Venture Lab at the Niterra Group. He brings more than 20 years of experience in venture building, investments, and corporate innovation. His track record includes over 100 company-building initiatives, the establishment of start-ups, venture studios, and accelerators, as well as more than 20 early-stage and growth investments and numerous M&A transactions.

Alice Besomi

Alice Besomi is Investment Director in the Venture Smart City team at Eurazeo. She spent 8 years in Singapore working for regional venture fund Jungle Ventures, and leading Seed to Series B investments into startups based in India and South East Asia, with a focus on B2B and SAAS. Previously, Alice spent ~4 years with A Plus Finance in Paris, as an Associate, contributing to several investments into French startups. Alice graduated from Paris Dauphine University (2010 - Master’s degree “Management of Innovation”,) and Sciences Po Lille (2009 - Master’s degree “International Marketing”).

Raphaël Cattan

Raphaël Cattan is an Investment Director in the Venture team at Eurazeo. He is involved in the origination, analysis and carrying out of investments in the Smart City sector, in Europe, Israel, the United States and Asia. Prior to joining the Group, Raphaël worked in strategy consulting, participating in digital strategy missions in the healthcare sector. He also worked in the public sector for TelCo regulations as well as in the cabinet of the Minister for Economy and Finance. Raphaël graduated from HEC Paris, Columbia University and Sciences Po.
