EEG Levy

EEG Levy

The EEG levy (Renewable Energy Sources Act Levy, also referred to as the green electricity levy in some contexts), was introduced in 2000 to finance the expansion of wind, solar, biomass, and hydropower plants. Operators of renewable energy systems feeding electricity into the grid received fixed payments from transmission system operators, who sold the electricity on the energy exchange at rates below the legally determined tariffs. The resulting shortfall was passed on to electricity consumers as part of the electricity price through the EEG levy until June 2022. Since July 1, 2022, consumers no longer pay the EEG levy, as it is now covered by the federal government’s “Energy and Climate Fund.” This removal of the EEG levy for consumers occurred six months earlier than originally planned.

In the context of demand side management (DSM), dynamic electricity tariffs provide a crucial monetary incentive for the targeted control of energy consumption. Predictive control through a cloud platform allows for optimal use of this potential. Intelligent software dynamically adjusts a building's electricity consumption based on grid conditions, using available energy only when necessary—considering weather conditions, room usage, and favorable electricity prices.
