The European Climate Law is a legally binding regulation of the European Union that came into effect in 2021. It forms the central framework for EU climate policy and legally enshrines the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. At the same time, an intermediate target is defined: By 2030, EU greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by at least 55% compared to 1990 levels.
The law serves to implement the European Green Deal and aims to ensure that all member states, companies, and citizens of the EU contribute to achieving the climate targets. It obliges the European Commission to regularly review progress and mandates that member states submit national energy and climate plans, which must be updated regularly.
In the commercial building sector, the European Climate Law promotes measures for energy efficiency, decarbonization, and resource conservation. It establishes a clear political and legal framework to drive investments in climate-friendly technologies and infrastructure. For property owners, facility managers, and investors, this means that sustainable building strategies are not only environmentally beneficial but also increasingly legally required to remain competitive in the long term.
