Electricity and gas providers ensure the energy supply to households, businesses, and public institutions. Unlike grid operators, customers can choose between different providers within a network area. Each household or property owner can enter into an individual contract with their chosen provider. Nationwide, around 1,000 companies compete in the energy market. Providers can be changed at any time, subject to the applicable notice periods. Like grid operators, energy providers play a key role in promoting sustainable energy use and advancing the energy transition. They operate power plants to produce electricity and gas, while also managing energy procurement on national and international markets.
In addition to supplying consumers, energy providers are responsible for services such as billing, tariff management, and customer consultation. They also play an advisory role in integrating renewable energies and support customers in selecting suitable tariffs for their needs. Through close collaboration with property owners and operators, they can contribute to building efficiency and sustainability. Energy providers are considered essential service companies and must adhere to strict legal regulations. These regulations are outlined in the Energy Industry Act, the Basic Supply Ordinance for electricity and gas, and the Network Fee Ordinances.
