A smart meter gateway is a communication unit with an integrated security model that connects the digital electricity meter to the smart grid. Through encrypted transmission of consumption data, it serves as an interface for communication between electricity consumers/producers, the metering point operator, grid operators, and energy suppliers. As a central data hub, the smart meter gateway is a key technology for the digitalization of the energy transition. In Germany, smart meter gateways are certified by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). This certification is crucial to meet data protection regulations and ensure that only authorized parties have access to the transmitted data.
