The Energy Efficiency Act (Energieeffizienzgesetz, EnEfG) is a German law that transposes the provisions of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) into national legislation. The EnEfG aims to sustainably reduce energy consumption in Germany by 2045 and contribute to achieving climate neutrality. To this end, it establishes binding requirements for various sectors and market participants.
A key element of the law is the introduction of a national final energy consumption target: By 2030, final energy consumption is to be reduced by 26.5% compared to 2008 levels. Another central provision is the obligation for companies with an average annual consumption of more than 7.5 GWh in the last three completed calendar years to implement an energy management system according to DIN EN ISO 50001 or an environmental management system under EMAS (Eco Management and Audit Scheme).
For the commercial building sector, the EnEfG underscores the necessity of optimizing energy consumption through modernized technical building equipment, the use of renewable energy, and digital solutions for operational optimization. Property owners, facility managers, and operators must prepare for stricter requirements and increased reporting obligations to meet efficiency targets. At the same time, the EnEfG provides financial incentives and funding programs to facilitate the transition to energy-efficient technologies, ultimately reducing both operating costs and the carbon footprint over the long term.
