Dynamic Electricity Tariffs

Dynamic Electricity Tariffs

Dynamic electricity tariffs are pricing models where the cost of electricity varies depending on supply and demand and at certain times. The " Law to Restart the Digitization of the Energy Transition," mandates that all electricity providers in Germany offer dynamic electricity tariffs starting in 2025. These tariffs are directly linked to the spot market price of the electricity exchange, providing consumers with an incentive to adjust their energy consumption flexibly according to the current electricity price, thereby saving costs. The prerequisite for signing up for a dynamic electricity tariff is the presence of an intelligent metering system, also known as a "smart meter". These systems automatically record and transmit the building's consumption data, ensuring that the dynamic tariff can be accurately billed at all times.

In the context of demand side management (DSM), dynamic electricity tariffs provide an essential monetary incentive for the targeted control of energy consumption. Predictive control via a cloud platform allows this potential to be optimally exploited. Intelligent software dynamically adjusts electricity consumption in the building according to grid conditions, using available energy only when it is actually necessary based on weather conditions and room usage, and when the electricity cost is favorable.
