Metering point operators

Metering point operators

Metering point operators are the third key players in gas and electricity supply, alongside energy suppliers and grid operators. They are responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and reading of meters, which can include both smart metering systems (smart meters) and traditional Ferraris meters. Typically, metering point operators are also the local grid operators and are listed on energy bills. They collect and transmit energy consumption data to energy suppliers and, if necessary, to grid operators, thus serving as the primary source of data for energy consumption optimization. The transition from analog meters to smart meters enables improved management and efficiency in building operations. Each network area has a default metering point operator responsible for these tasks unless another company is specifically chosen. This is referred to as a competitive operator. These play a central role in the transition to smart meters in particular, as they often specialize in the installation of smart metering systems, which can drive the widespread use of smart meters.
