Smart grid

Smart grid

A smart grid refers to the extensive networking of all participants in an energy system, from energy generation to transport, storage, distribution, and consumption. In a smart grid, every network operator knows when and how much electricity is needed or produced in a region and how production and consumption can be optimally coordinated. This requires intelligent metering systems, also known as "smart meters," which are gradually replacing traditional electricity meters in Germany. These systems provide crucial information to automate the alignment of generation, grid load, and consumption.

The building sector plays a significant role in the smart grid of the future due to its high energy demand. Through demand side management (DSM) and suitable cloud solutions, consumption and generation data from buildings can be analyzed to identify optimal windows for electricity procurement and feed-in. This enables more efficient energy management within buildings, supports the integration of renewable energies, and contributes to the stability and reliability of the supply system.
